First Drafted – Pickard

Tonight the NHL is having the first round of their draft and Chet Pickard was the first goalie taken. Nashville takes the Tri-Cities Americans with the 18th overall pick. http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?page=DraftStats&position=All&round=1&service=page&team=All&year=2008. Pickard has good size (6’2″ 210 lbs) and apparently moves very well in the net.

I’m sure he will not see regular NHL duty for until the 2012-13 season considering the goalie situaiton in Nashville (assuming they feel Ellis can do the job). That would be ideal for Pickard’s development.

The Central Scouting’s Al Jensen, a previous netminder with Washington had this to say about Pickard-

“Number one he is very confident. He is very strong in his crease and he isn’t predictable. His net coverage is very good and he reads the play well. I think he presents himself very well in the net and he has very good goalie instincts. He is very consistent which is a big positive for him. He is able to put any bad goals behind him; he doesn’t let anything bother him yet he is very competitive.  The first time I saw Pickard, I saw Olaf Kolzig — I saw him big time in there.”
