As posted last month, the NHL will be making changes to the goalie gear for next season. First, padding around the knee will be decreased to prevent it from providing the goalie 5-hole coverage. Knee pads will have to be contured and no goalie can wear pants with built-in knee pads.
Another adjustment is made to leg pads – the calf protection will be, like knee protection, more contured.
Lastly, the chest and arm’s clavicle protection will be tied-down to the pads so the goalie does not look so large in net.
Next year (2009-2010 season) the NHL will go to proportionate sizing for goalie pads meaning pad size will be related to goalie’s height and weight.
