On January 1st, 2009 the NHL will hold its third outdoor game in a large stadium. First, in November 2003, the Edmonton Oilers played the Montreal Canadiens in Edmonton . The next outdoor game, held last season, Buffalo hosted the Pittsburgh Pens in the first annual “NHL Winter Classic.” This year, the game moves to Chicago where the Black Hawks will square off against the Detroit Red Wings.
One player will have been part of all three games: Ty Conklin. The American backstopped Edmonton, Pittsburgh and now is part of the tandem for the Red Wings.
Conklin is 1-1 outdoors (lost with Edmonton, won with Sydney Crosby’s shootout goal with Pittsburgh). On January 1, will he better or worsen his record? Either way, he is in a special position to have been involved in three outdoor games.
